The Difficulty in Discussing God - Reason #5
The Limitations of the
Human Intellect
by Tom Laughlin
return to God page
If there is a God that exists outside of us, a God that created the universe and everything in it, whether that God be a personal God, a spirit, an energy, or a life force -- the ability to create the universe requires an intelligence and a power that clearly is superior to our limited human intelligence and human power, clearly superior to the nature of our human intelligence, i.e., Super(ior)-natural. We still can't cure the common cold, let alone create from nothing a living being, so just as clearly, because our limited intelligence cannot comprehend how millions of even the simplest of these created "products" function, let alone create them ourselves, we certainly have no capacity to understand the nature of the Creator of the world, everything in it, and life itself.
Because there is such an enormous gap between our idea of God and the reality of God, we must never forget that Almighty God, the creator of the existential universe, and the internal universe of each of us, is not bound by man's puny intellect and our limited ability to conceptualize, imagine, define or describe Him. As Meister Eckhart said, God is black. The master pointed out it is so impossible for our limited intellect to define God that everything we say about God falls so far short of the Living God, that we can say anything we want about God, for all of it bears almost no relationship to the Real God.
Our limited ego intelligence has not yet even developed the capacity to grasp the enormity and power of our own unconscious, that hidden unknown side of our personality that is infinitely more powerful and intelligent than our conscious personality. In fact, because it is this other unknown center of the personality in the unconscious that creates our ego, intellect and will in the first place, we will never be able to understand the nature of the Entity that creates everything in the universe until you first begin to understand the nature of this Entity, this other center in our personality with its Superior Intelligence and Superior Power that exists in our unconscious.
